Commitment to achieving Net Zero

Blu Building Consultants are committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any formal strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Baseline Year: 2021

Additional details relating to the Baseline Emissions calculations:

Blu Building Consultants have measured and reported scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions since January 2021 and will continue to report emissions to the calendar year period. Blu’s carbon emissions have been calculated in accordance with the GHG Protocol, using DEFRA conversion factors, for the emissions sources detailed in PPN06/21. Blu also voluntarily report on homeworking emissions.

Scope 1 includes direct emissions only, which involves transport in company owned vehicles.

Scope 2 encompasses indirect emissions from Blu’s electricity consumption (including heating and electricity used for hybrid plug-in vehicles).

Scope 3 incorporates employee commuting, business travel in non-company cars, electricity transmission and distribution, water supply, water treatment, key suppliers, waste and homeworking. The emissions included within Blu’s carbon accounting are detailed in the infographic, below.

Baseline Year Emissions: 2021

Emissions Total (tCO2e)
Scope 1 4.28
Scope 2 0.33
Scope 3
(included sources)
16.5
Total Emissions 21.11
(3.52 per full time employee)

Current Emissions Reporting: 2023

Emissions Total (tCO2e)
Scope 1 0.7
Scope 2 0.36
Scope 3
(included sources)
4.7
Total Emissions 5.76
(0.82 per full time employee)

  • Business travel in non-company cars
  • Electricity T&D
  • Key suppliers
  • Water supply
  • Water treatment
  • Waste
  • Working from home

Following a review of Blu’s emissions for 2023, the calculations indicate that the significant emissions sources are business travel (54.92%), employee commuting (22.87%) and working from home emissions (13.86%).

Notable changes since 2021 baseline:

  • Change in company car vehicles – transitioning from diesel to electric.
  • Electricity decreased in 2023, potentially due to warmer year.
  • Commuting to the office has reduced.
  • Emissions from business travel in non-company cars has reduced, as a result of employees upgrading to electric vehicles and significantly reduced travel, due to more local site locations.

Emissions Reduction Targets

Blu Building Consultants are committed to continuing to review and reduce energy consumption and associated carbon emissions in line with the following targets:

  • Reach net zero emissions across Scope 1 and 2 by 2035
  • Reach net zero emissions for scope 3 by 2040
  • Reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 60% by 2028, measured against the 2021 baseline
